I'm a pretty big paypal fan, but just about every commercial website that uses paypal requires that you establish a merchant agreement between that coropration and your payapl account. By accepting the agreement, you authorize that merchant to demand funds of your account without your authorization. Today, I got a very nice email from paypal informing me that they'd withdrawn $5 from my bank account according to their merchant agreement with godaddy, and their agreement with my bank. There were no credit or debit cards involved; no calls to visa were made. The money came directly out of my bank account and then went directly in to godaddy's pocket.
Now, to be fair, I did authorize godaddy to do this, and I did set clanbnu.net to automatically renew, but there are quite a few problems I have with the system. First of all, godaddy has not once informed me that they planned on doing this; the first notification on the subject which I recieved came from paypal, when the money was withdrawn. There's no reason that godaddy shouldn't have emailed me last week to warn me that they were going to take the money - that way, I'd have time to make sure that, for example, the account wasn't already overdrawn, or whatever. Maybe I'd even have one fewer drink at the bar to offset the anticipated $5 charge (probably not).
Secondly, paypal did not give me the option to choose which funding source to use for the transaction. I don't leave money in my paypal account, because I only use it as a proxy. Whenever I buy something using paypal, I'm asked to choose one of my 3 funding sources - my bank account, my debit card, or my credit card. I inevitably always choose my credit card, because it makes my credit go up and I don't have to pay for it right away. This time, however, paypal seems to have randomly decided that the money was going to come out of my bank account. That's pretty weak.
