The value of your computer decays exponentially, too. Even if you sell it in a year, you won't recover more than a few hundred dollars.

There's no reason for you to just spend if you don't need what you're spending it on. Just buy something that does what you need it to do and maybe slightly more. In my opinion the biggest thing is building a computer that you can upgrade when new things come out as needed.
